After a 14-game slate last week, Wednesday Night Hockey is back to its normal schedule with three games on tap - Canadiens at Blue Jackets, Red Wings at Rangers, and Capitals at Kings.
Let's take a look at each game and make some picks!
|CLB Blue Jackets
The start of the 2023/24 season could not have gone any worse for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Mike Babcock was fired before the start of training camp. Patrik Liane has been benched and healthy scratched. Johnny Gaudreau has been missing in action.
But things look like they might be starting to change. Columbus has won three of its last four games, two of which came against the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins. They have four players who have played at a point per game pace over the last four games, including Gaudreau.
Maybe this is a case where it has taken the Blue Jackets some time to get used to a new head coach and systems.
Montreal is finishing up a five-game road trip tonight in Columbus. Their previous three games were in California taking on the Sharks, Ducks and Kings. That alone puts Montreal at a disadvantage. On top of that, they're not playing their best hockey.
The Canadiens are 4-8-1 in their last 13 games. They're struggling to score goals. Cole Caufield, Sean Monahan, Juraj Slafkovsky all have two goals each in their last 13 games. No one is playing at a point per game pace, Nick Suzuki is the closest at 10 points in 13 games.
I don't like this game for Montreal. They're running into a Columbus team that is playing their best hockey of the season. And the Canadiens are going to be tired as they finish up a five-game road trip coming from the pacific time zone.
Columbus Money Line -130
Player Milestones: J. Gaudreau 1+ Points -150
|DET Red Wings
The Red Wings visit Madison Square Garden to take on the best team in the NHL, the New York Rangers.
The Rangers are in first place in the NHL standings with a record of 15-4-1. The crazy thing is that the Rangers haven't had huge scoring seasons from their top players. Artemi Panarin has 30 points in 20 games. Outside of him, they haven't put up a ton of points.
The backbone of this Rangers team is their goaltending. They have the third best team save percentage in the NHL. Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick have been outstanding. Quick in particular has been great. He has a .930 save percentage and 1.99 goals against average.
Detroit has been playing some good hockey this season, especially recently as they've won their last three games, two of which came against the Bruins and Devils.
Detroit is being led by J.T Compher. He has 13 points in his last 11 games and Lucas Raymond has 6 goals in his last 11 games.
Detroit needs to get more out of Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin. They both got off to incredible starts but have cooled off as of late.
This should be a fun game. I like the home team with the hot goalies in this one.

LA is a juggernaut right now. They're playing some great hockey are getting contributions throughout their lineup. The Kings are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games, with six players logging at least 8 points in that span.
The Kings goaltending was supposed to be an issue this season, but it hasn't been. Cam Talbot has been phenomenal. In 14 starts, Talbot has 10 wins, a 2.02 goals against average, a .931 save percentage, and one shutout. This Kings team looks great and are going to be a handful for the Washington Capitals.
After getting off to a rough start to the season, Washington has started to turn things around. The Capitals are 6-3-0 in their last nine games. They're getting solid performances from their depth players like Aliaksei Protas, Connor McMichael, and Sonny Milano. However, their big guns like Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie, and Evgeny Kuznetsov have been playing below expectations. Ovechkin has 5 goals this season. Tom Wilson has 4. TJ Oshie has 1.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Capitals had a full day to spend in LA on Tuesday, one of the best road cities in the NHL.
I like the Kings in this matchup. They are playing incredible hockey this season and getting solid performances from all four lines.
