Wednesday Night Hockey Preview: Picks and predictions for Stars-Panthers, Penguins-Lightning, and Canes-Oilers

We are in for a night of close games in the NHL. All three games being featured on national TV are great matchups between teams who are playing similar hockey at the moment.

All of the Stars, Panthers, Penguins and Lightning are looking to snap out of a mediocre run of play.

The night game features two high end teams playing some of their best hockey of the season.

Let's look at each game and make some picks!

Dallas Stars @ Florida Panthers Prediction

The Dallas Stars continue their Florida road trip with a stop in Sunrise to take on the Panthers.

The Stars are playing some mediocre hockey at the moment with a record of 2-2-2 in their last six games. They’ve been on a streak where they win one, then lose one. They’re still getting solid production from Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski who each have seven points in their last six games.

Dallas is running into a team that is also not playing their best hockey of the season. The Florida Panthers are 2-3-1 in their last six games with losses to the Bruins, Maple Leafs and Islanders. The Panthers have lots going for them when you consider that they have both Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour back in the lineup after missing the first six weeks of the season with injuries.

One thing the Panthers need is for their best player, Matthew Tkachuk, to find his scoring touch again. Tkachuk has just 19 points in 24 games, and two in his last six games. He hasn’t been the same this season after getting injured in the Stanley Cup final.

This feels like a coin toss matchup. I’ll take the Stars who are coming off a bad 4-0 loss in Tampa Bay on Monday. They’ll look to bounce back in a big way in Florida.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Tampa Bay Lightning prediction

One of the more disappointing teams in the NHL this season has been the Pittsburgh Penguins. They sit 22nd in the overall standings and 7th in the metropolitan division. That’s not good enough for such a talented team who has pushed all their chips to the middle of the table on being competitive.

One of the reasons for their struggles is their power play that is running at a 10.5% clip.

Pittsburgh is 2-2-3 in their last seven games. They’re not getting great production from their top players. Things aren’t going well for Kyle Dubas and company.

The same can be said for the Tampa Bay Lightning. They too are not playing up to the standard that they have set over the last decade. Tampa is 2-4-1 in their last seven games despite having the league leader in points in Nikita Kucherov. The power play could be a difference maker in this game. Tampa currently ranks 2nd in the NHL in power play percentage.

I’m going to take the home team coming off a victory, and who has the better power play, to win this game.

Carolina Hurricanes @ Edmonton Oilers prediction

The night cap has the Carolina Hurricanes in Edmonton to take on a rejuvenated Oilers team who has won four straight games.

It’s a pretty simple game plan for the Oilers. If Connor McDavid is playing like the best player in the world, then the Oilers are a good team. If he’s not playing like the best player in the world, they’re in trouble.

Luckily for the Oilers, Connor McDavid is playing like the best player in the world. He has 14 points in his last five games and is taking over games like he has done since entering the league in the 2015-16 season.

The Hurricanes are going to be in for a tough night because of their goaltending. The Hurricanes have the worst team save percentage in the NHL. That’s going to be a problem with the way Edmonton, and Connor McDavid in particular are playing right now. Edmonton has scored 23 goals in their last five games.

Carolina is a great defensive team, but that can only take you so far when playing against a team with the fire power that the Oilers have.

The good times are going to continue tonight. I’m picking the Oilers to win on home ice.
