Toronto Maple Leafs Next Head Coach Odds: Who will be hired for 2024/25 season?

Sheldon Keefe is out as Toronto Maple Leafs head coach after another first-round playoff exit, so we'll break down the odds for the next Leafs coach.

Toronto made the playoffs in each of its four seasons under Keefe, but they only one won playoff series, although it was their first since 2004.

The Leafs scored the second-most goals (298, 3.63 per game) in the 2023/24 NHL Regular Season, but their goals per game average dropped to 1.71 in their postseason series against the Boston Bruins.

The team signed Auston Matthews to a lucrative contract extension before the season and he made it look like a good decision with 69 goals in the regular season, but he only scored once in the postseason.

William Nylander, a fellow recipient of a big-money contract extension, led the team with three goals in the series but did not get much offensive help.

Toronto will likely want a coach who can continue to get the team and its core four offensive superstars - Matthews, Nylander, Mitch Marner and John Tavares - playing exciting regular season hockey.

The challenge for the new coach will be getting those players to keep it up in the postseason while getting the team to be defensively solid enough to win when the stakes are highest.

Craig Berube, the +100 favourite to get the job, was most recently fired by the St. Louis Blues after 28 games in 2023/24 despite having led them to win the Stanley Cup in 2019.

Unlike the current Leafs roster, Berube wasn't coaching any megastars in St. Louis, but his ability to get more out of the team than the sum of its parts might intrigue the Toronto front office.

Former Los Angeles Kings head coach Todd McLellan, who was fired midseason with a 23-15-10 record, is the second-favorite at +110.

Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason is +900 to get the Toronto job, likely thanks to how he's developed players in his current position.

Jay Woodcroft - who was fired early in the 2023/24 campaign after a dreadful start with the Edmonton Oilers - is next in the odds at +900.

Gerard Gallant is the fifth-favourite at +1000, and he's mostly known for getting the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in the franchise's first year of existence. Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour is also +1000.

Former Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher is +1200, and three-time Stanley Cup winner Joel Quenneville is +2000.

Further back on the list of candidates are Bruce Boudreau, two-time Cup winner Mike Sullivan, Claude Julien, and another two-time Cup-winning coach in Darryl Sutter.
