Both Portland and Vancouver have similar records going into their meeting at BC Place and there may be very little to separate them come the final whistle.
The Whitecaps are third in the Conference and ahead of the Timbers only on goal difference - albeit from a game less - having started the season with promising defensive performances, with only the Houston Dynamo having conceded fewer goals than the Caps’ four in the West.
The Timbers meanwhile are looking to put an end to their current two match losing streak, with their last league obligation resulting in a comprehensive 3-1 home defeat to Eastern Conference outfit Philadelphia Union.
With seven points to show from their opening fixtures, the Timbers - who have played five games - and the Caps (four) know that there is room for improvement.
Portland started the season in electric goalscoring form with eight goals in its opening three games - including a 4-1 demolition of the Colorado Rapids to begin the campaign - but consecutive defeats to Houston and Philadelphia have seen the early progress stall.
The Caps started in similar fashion with two wins and a draw from their opening four games and could have gone into this meeting in top spot had it not been for a second-half comeback from Real Salt Lake last time out - a game that the Whitecaps lost 2-1.
After missing out on the playoffs by a single point last season - primarily due to heavy defeats in their final two games of the regular season - the Timbers are looking for more consistency in this campaign but victory may be out of their grasp, having lost two of their three meetings with the Whitecaps last season.
However, a tie should be more than achievable given that both sides registered double digits in draws last season.
Although a tight encounter is expected in Vancouver, there is still the potential for there to be goals given the excitement and drama in last season’s meetings.
A total of 10 goals were scored across their three head-to-heads in 2023, with two of these matches seeing both sides find the back of the net.
Half of this tally came in the most recent meeting in August when Brian White and Ryan Gauld ran the show for the Whitecaps, scoring and assisting each other in a 3-2 victory at Portland’s Providence Park home.
Three of Vancouver’s four MLS games this season have seen goals at both ends while the same can be said for four of Portland’s opening five, so there should be at least something to cheer about for both sets of fans in this one.
Vancouver’s star striker Brian White finished sixth in the goalscoring charts last season, notching 15 goals and registering five assists in what was his best ever campaign.
The American has already opened his account this time around with a stooping header at FC Dallas and he will undoubtedly be the danger man for the hosts at the weekend.
White has also registered a couple of assists across his four appearances so will be in and around the penalty box to offer a creative spark in front of goal. He looks an appealing option to find the back of the net.
