The Legends Stage of this year's CS:GO IEM Rio is underway

Esports: Roobet Cup Quarter-finals Preview

Counter Strike: Global Offensive's Roobet Cup is into the playoff stage with only eight teams still in contention for the $150,000 grand prize.

The quarter-finals take place across Monday and Tuesday with some teams sure to have one eye on the IEM Cologne, which begins next week. Here is a look at the playoff matches taking place in the next couple of days.

BIG can comfortably see off Eternal Fire

Eternal Fire scraped through to the quarter-finals of the Roobet Cup, losing their map pick of Nuke 2-16 in their decider match with MOUZ, only to fight back and take Mirage and Inferno to win the overall encounter 2-1 and progress.

Despite showing mental resilience to turn that match on its head, their performance early in that contest will be of concern, while their opening loss to ENCE suggests they may be a cut below the rest of the sides in the playoffs.

And their Roobet Cup journey could come to an end at the hands of BIG, who topped Group A with 2-1 wins over Entropiq and FaZe Clan and they can prevail by the same scoreline in this match.

Little stopping Cloud9

The most comfortable side in the group stage of the CS:GO Roobet Cup appeared to be Cloud9, who topped Group B with a 2-0 win-loss record.

They also finished the group stage with the biggest points differential of any other side in the tournament (+30) and secured the top seed in their section with a comfortable win over strong Danish side Astralis, winning 16-7 on both Overpass and Mirage.

Cloud9 are also fresh from rising to the top at the IEM Dallas and they are strongly fancied to overcome 9z in their quarter-final encounter.

Finishing as runners-up in Group D, 9z were not entirely convincing, relying on a 2-1 success in their decider match with FURIA to book their spot in the playoffs, and punters could do worse than back a 2-0 victory for Cloud9.

ENCE can overpower flustered FaZe

Much was expected from ENCE going into the Roobet Cup, given they secured the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown title back in May, albeit failing to capitalise in the Premier Spring Finals, while they also reached the semi-finals of the PGL Major Antwerp earlier this year.

On top of that, they were runners-up to Cloud9 at the IEM Dallas and they could be dark horses in this competition.

FaZe are naturally considered one of the most talented outfits on the CS:GO circuit but they were defeated on Dust II and Overpass in a 2-1 loss to BIG in the Group A winners' match and do not look at their sharpest right now.

They may find themselves having to quickly turn their attention to the IEM Cologne with ENCE tipped to win this one and make the tournament's last four.

Astralis set for straightforward success

Group D winners forZe looked quite comfortable in booking their place in the quarter-finals of the Roobet Cup but it is fair to say their group was not the toughest and they face difficul opponents in Astralis in the playoffs.

With a 2-0 win-loss record, forZe topped the group ahead of a rather uninspiring 9z team and FURIA Esports, having faced an Outsiders team playing only their second ever event in their group opener.

Even in that match they dropped a map, losing 16-6 on Dust II, and they are worth swerving at 11/8 in this match.

Instead, Astralis look good to prevail, having finished second to a strong Cloud9 unit in Group B. They recorded wins over both Complexity and Movistar Riders, having also pushed Cloud9 close, and are a good bet to qualify for the tournament's semi-finals.
