As we approach the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, the final day of the regular season features some fantastic matchups, one of which is between two Western Conference playoff teams with the Winnipeg Jets hosting the Vancouver Canucks.
To get you set for this potential postseason series, we’ve provided the latest odds alongside our best predictions and player props.
The Canucks vs. Jets game tonight may not have been a common pick for the Western Conference Finals in the preseason, but it is very much a possibility at this point. In fact, it’s one of the most likely.
Following their win on Tuesday night, Vancouver locked up the Pacific Division, which is the first time they’ve done so since 2013.
Although Winnipeg wasn’t able to win the Central Division, they did well enough to earn home-ice advantage over the Colorado Avalanche, who won the Stanley Cup two seasons ago.
In other words, tonight is an extremely great matchup to gauge how these teams stack up ahead of the postseason.
We have quite a contrast of styles, with the Canucks being one of the most high-powered offenses in the NHL, while the Jets have one of the best goaltenders in Connor Hellebuyck. That contrast led to them splitting their first two meetings of the season, so for our best prediction, we’d target the Total or Over/Under.
Although Vancouver has the superior offense, it’s not quite as prolific as it was the first half of the season when they were leading the NHL in goals per game. It still ranks within the top 10, but it has fallen a bit, and they’ve scored more than three goals just twice in their last 10 games.
Along with the Jets preferring a low-scoring game, we’d recommend going with Under 5.5 goals.
Admittedly, when it comes to matchups between these teams, the player prop markets aren’t as robust in comparison to matchups like the Edmonton Oilers vs. Colorado Avalanche tonight. However, there is still one spot that we feel is worth targeting.
Although we don’t anticipate a ton of goals to be scored, someone has to help find the back of the net, and that is where we’re targeting Vancouver’s J.T. Miller. He has had an absolutely incredible season, recording an impressive 103 points. Of those 103, 66 have been assists, and that is our focus for tonight.
That’s among the tops in the entire NHL, and although teammate Quinn Hughes has even more with 74 assists, there is virtually no value targeting him in this regard. You could consider a multi-point prop for Hughes, but given how well Winnipeg's Hellebuyck has played between the pipes, that doesn’t seem like the best approach.
With all that in mind, our favorite way to approach the Canucks vs. Jets player prop markets is with JT Miller to record an assist.
