Edmonton Oilers vs St. Louis Blues preview: Odds, picks, predictions, injuries, TV & more

The Edmonton Oilers look to keep up their high level of play when the St. Louis Blues come to town on Thursday night.

Edmonton has been the best team in hockey since Thanksgiving, while St. Louis has enjoyed a nice recent stretch that has catapulted them to the second Wild Card spot.

The Blues have an uphill battle in this one. But they will get up for this one and push back as hard as possible. This will be a good one for hockey fans, even outside of Oilers and Blues fans.

Edmonton Oilers vs St. Louis Blues Predictions

Oilers to win -1.5 (+125)

The Blues have actually played very good hockey lately. But this has less to do with the Blues and more to do with the Oilers. Edmonton is just that good. They would be a good pick against just about any team in hockey right now, even at the puck line.

The Oilers have been the best team in hockey since late November. They are on a torrid 26-5-0 run including 18 wins in their last 20 games. Of those 26 wins, just 7 of them were by a single goal. The Oilers are not squeaking out close games. They are completely bullying teams.

Despite the Blues’ solid recent form, over the course of the season, they have been confusingly inconsistent.

They have beat teams it looks like they have no business beating, then lose to teams it looks like they have no business losing to. The Blues are not nearly as reliable of a play as the Oilers, even against the puck line.

Zach Hyman over 0.5 goals (+120)

Somewhat surprisingly, the Oilers’ team leader in goals is not named Connor MacDavid or Leon Draisaitl.

The team leader in goals is Zach Hyman. Potentially even more surprisingly, his 32 goals is seven more than Draisaitl’s second-most 25 goals. Any player that skates with some combination of McDavid or Draisaitl always has a good chance to produce. Hyman is walking proof.

That is not to take anything away from the player that Hyman is. He would be a top 3-6 player on all 32 teams. But it certainly does not hurt that at any point during a game, he is on the ice with some combination of McDavid, Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Evan Bouchard among other great players.

The Oilers are the hottest team in hockey going on 3 months now and Zach Hyman has been a significant factor. There has been no indication that will change any time soon. Edmonton has a favourable matchup tonight in what has the makings of a high-scoring game. Plus money is good value for Hyman to get on the board.

Over 6.5 total goals (-105)

The pure matchup bodes well for a high total. The Oilers have a couple of the most dangerous offensive weapons on the planet and their offensive numbers are reflective.

Despite a horrible first month and a half of the season, Edmonton ranks 4th in the NHL in goals scored per game and have the league’s 3rd best power play.

The Blues do not exactly excel in goal prevention. They rank 15th in the league in goals allowed per game. That is not bad, but against an elite offense like the Oilers, it is a vulnerability.

The Blues already allow over three goals per game on average which is nearly halfway to this game total. The Oilers should do their part in contributing to a high total and would not leave much left for the Blues to contribute. St. Louis can absolutely put up 2-3 goals which should be enough of a contribution to take this one over the total.
