NHL Power Rankings: Avs rise, Rangers fall

Last week around the NHL, we saw both winning and losing streaks get extended.

The Edmonton Oilers extended their winning streak to double digits, while their division rivals, the Seattle Kraken, are hot on their tail, winning nine straight games. Staying in that Pacific division, the Los Angeles Kings have dropped their last nine games, allowing the Oilers to pull within one point of them in the standings.

With help from our friends at Daily Faceoff, let's take a look at the biggest risers and fallers in their weekly power rankings.

Jump ahead here:

Let's dive in!

Risers

Arizona Coyotes

Ranking: 24th -> 18th (+6)

Last Week's Record: 2-1. +4 points.

Tuesday: Coyotes 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins (1st)

Thursday: Coyotes 6-2 loss to the Calgary Flames (23rd)

Saturday: Coyotes 6-0 win over the Minnesota Wild (27th)

Division Standings: Sixth in the Central (-), 11 points behind the Dallas Stars.

Wild Card Standings: Fifth in the wild card (+1), three points behind the Edmonton Oilers.

Player of the Week: Clayton Keller

The Coyotes leading point scorer continued to carry his team over this three-game week. Clayton Keller finished this week with four goals (one in each game), six points and a +2 rating. Player prop bettors would be thrilled with Keller this week, covering his over 2.5 shots on goal line and registering a point in all three games.

Coyotes Week 15 Schedule: Calgary Flames (23rd), Vancouver Canucks (5th) and Seattle Kraken (17th).

Colorado Avalanche

Ranking: 6th -> 3rd (+3)

Last Week's Record: 3-0. +6 points.

Monday: 4-3 shootout win over Boston Bruins (1st)

Wednesday: 3-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights (9th)

Saturday: 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs (14th)

Division Standings: Second in the Central (-), one point behind the Winnipeg Jets.

League Standings: Fourth in the league (-), two points behind the Vancouver Canucks.

Player of the Week: Mikko Rantanen

Mikko Rantanen extended his point streak from four to seven games with points in all three Avalanche games. He finished with two goals and five points with a -1 rating. The Avalanche powerplay converted on four of their fourteen opportunities, and Rantanen contributed on three of those four. Shot prop bettors who took his over 3.5 line would have cashed in all three games.

Avalanche Week 15 Schedule: Montreal Canadiens (26th), Ottawa Senators (28th), Boston Bruins (1st) and Philadelphia Flyers (12th).

Fallers

Minnesota Wild

Ranking: 22nd -> 27th (-5)

Last Week's Record: 0-3-1. +1 point.

Monday: 4-0 loss to the Dallas Stars (8th)

Wednesday: 7-2 loss to the Dallas Stars (8th)

Friday: 4-3 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers (12th)

Saturday: 6-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes (18th)

Division Standings: Seventh in the Central (-), 16 points behind the Dallas Stars.

Wild Card Standings: Seventh in the wild card (-), eight points behind the Edmonton Oilers.

Let Down of the Week: Marco Rossi

Marco Rossi saw his minutes increase with all the injury troubles the Wild faced last week -- and it did not pay off. Rossi failed to register a point in any of the Wild's four games last week and finished with a -6 rating. Kirill Kaprizov returned to Rossi's left-wing side, which should help Rossi produce anything offensively this week.

Wild Week 15 Schedule: New York Islanders (21st), Tampa Bay Lightning (19th), Florida Panthers (2nd) and Carolina Hurricanes (7th).

New York Rangers

Ranking: 2nd -> 6th (-4)

Last Week's Record: 1-3. +2 points.

Monday: 6-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks (5th)

Thursday: 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues (25th)

Saturday: 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals (22nd)

Sunday: 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals (22nd)

Division Standings: First in the Metropolitan (-), three points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.

League Standings: Sixth in the league (-1), five points behind the Vancouver Canucks.

Let Down of the Week: Igor Shesterkin

Igor Shesterkin played three of the Rangers four games and finished with a 1-2 record. Against the Canucks, Shesterkin allowed five goals and had a .800 save percentage. It gets worse against the Blues, allowing four goals and finishing with a .789 save percentage. Shesterkin redeemed himself on Sunday against the Capitals, only allowing one goal, but his struggles earlier in the week lands him on this list.

Rangers Week 15 Schedule: Seattle Kraken (17th), Vegas Golden Knights (9th), Los Angeles Kings (10th) and Anaheim Ducks (30th).

NHL Week 15 preview

Carolina Hurricanes To Continue Their Streak?

As I write this, the Carolina Hurricanes have yet to take on the Los Angeles Kings (10th), who have lost eight straight games. The Carolina Hurricanes have won seven of their last eight games, with their lone loss being in a shootout.

The Hurricanes are -150 odds favourites over the Kings for today's game. If they continue this streak, the rest of the week looks promising for them to extend their wins to double digits, with matchups against the Minnesota Wild (27th) and Detroit Red Wings (20th.)

Colorado Avalanche Powerplay

Colorado has the league's eighth-best powerplay, converting at a 25% rate. This week, the Avalanche take on the Canadiens, Senators and Bruins, who all rank in the top 10 for powerplay opportunities against per game.

While yes, the Bruins allow take a lot of penalties, their penalty kill ranks third in the league. The Canadiens and Senators both rank in the bottom five at penalty kill percentage; consider Avalanche powerplay point props in those matchups.

Josh Morrissey Shots On Goal Props

Josh Morrissey has been shooting at a higher rate since the injury of the Winnipeg Jets star forward, Kyle Connor. Of the 17 games Connor has missed, Morrissey has gone over his 2.5 shots on goal prop line in 13 games and averages 3.2 shots per game.

The Jets only play two games this week, against the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators. These two opponents allow the second and sixth most shots on goal to defenceman over the last twenty days. Consider his shots on goal prop in both of these matchups.
