With the 2023/24 NHL season now in the rearview, let’s look ahead at the favourites to win the Cup next June.
The Florida Panthers lifted their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, outlasting the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 to keep Canada – and its prodigal son Connor McDavid – from a long-awaited championship.
Can the Oilers get back to the Cup final? What are the Panthers’ odds to repeat?
Let’s dive in!
EDM Oilers | +800 |
NJ Devils | +900 |
FLA Panthers | +1000 |
DAL Stars | +1000 |
COL Avalanche | +1100 |
CAR Hurricanes | +1100 |
NY Rangers | +1300 |
VAN Canucks | +1400 |
TOR Maple Leafs | +1400 |
McDavid and the Oilers (+800) are the outright favourites to win the Stanley Cup in 2024/25.
A Canadian-based team has not won it all since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens, a drought that has now extended to 31 seasons since Lord Stanley returned to the home of hockey.
McDavid is under contract through 2025/26, while running mate Leon Draisaitl recently signed a long-term contract extension to keep him in Edmonton long-term and avoid seeing him enter free agency after the upcoming season.
The NJ Devils, looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs last season, are second in the odds at +900 after hiring Sheldon Keefe as head coach. They made key additions to the back end including goaltender Jacob Markstrom and defencemen Brett Pesce and Johnathan Kovacevic.
The Dallas Stars and reigning champion Florida Panthers are tied at +1000.
Dallas did a good job of integrating young talents like Logan Stankoven and Thomas Harley while the team made a run to the Western Conference Finals, and they bring back their core players including Jake Oettinger, Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen.
The Panthers accomplished their main goal this offseason, which was signing last season's leading goalscorer, Sam Reinhart, to a contract extension. They also brought back young defenceman Anton Lundell on a long-term deal and kept the core of the team intact.
The Colorado Avalanche are tied for fifth in the odds with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Avs are led by reigning Hart Trophy winner Nathan MacKinnon and star defenceman Cale Makar, while the 'Canes have a well-rounded team coached by one of the game's best, Rod Brind'Amour.
The New York Rangers are next in the market after having a relatively uneventful offseason. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2023/24 and fell to the Panthers in six games.
Two Canadian teams, the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs, are tied at +1400.
The 'Nucks signed key defenceman Filip Hronek to a long-term deal this offseason, and they agreed to a two-year deal with 23-year-old goaltender Arturs Silovs, who played well in the playoffs.
Toronto fell in the first round of the playoffs once again and fired head coach Sheldon Keefe because of the early exit. The team hired Craig Berube as the new coach and brought in veteran defenceman Chris Tanev to try and fix the team's weaknesses on that end.
Further back in the odds between 16/1 and 25/1 are the Vegas Golden Knights, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles Kings.
