Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

This series has already made history when Danny Jansen became the first player in MLB history to play for both teams in one game on Monday, but we're focusing on Tuesday night's game for these picks.

Game 1 of yesterday’s makeshift doubleheader was a continuation of a game that was suspended two months ago which is how Jansen's historic feat happened.

Anyway, the Blue Jays won both games and have three games left in this current series. The probable pitchers for Tuesday night are Yariel Rodriguez for the Blue Jays and Cooper Criswell for the Red Sox.

At this point, I can't believe the Red Sox are still favorites. If you take out Monday’s continuation game, the Sox have lost four straight games. Not only that, but they’ve been the favourite in all four games.

Oddsmakers continue to expect the Sox lineup to score five or more runs a night and the bullpen to magically improve. However, it seems the only way that the Sox can win a game is if their lineup can somehow score seven or more runs a night.

That’s because the Boston rotation and bullpen have been laughably bad in the last few weeks and have shown zero signs of improving.

On the mound looking to break that pattern on Tuesday is Cooper Criswell, a right-handed pitcher who has bounced between Triple-A and the Majors this year.

Criswell enters this matchup with a 4.41 ERA paired with a 3.91 xERA. This will be just his second start in over a month since he was moved to the bullpen when he was brought back to the club in June. In August, the right-hander has a 7.59 ERA paired with a 2.25 WHIP in 10.2 innings.

Blue Jays starter Yariel Rodriguez has been a hard pitcher to predict. He’s shown flashes of brilliance, but also plenty of rookie mistakes. Rodriguez appeared to be improving in July when he posted a 3.13 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in five starts and his control was much better.

The right-hander’s biggest problem of late has been the long ball. He’s allowed five home runs in his last three outings which is very unlike him considering he surrendered just three homers in his first 12 starts.

When the rookie limits the big fly, he’s usually been successful. That’s going to be the key against this Red Sox lineup that will try to pepper the Green Monster all night long.

The bottom line is the Red Sox aren’t playing well enough to be a favorite, so take the Jays at plus odds.

Over 9.5 (-120)

The Red Sox have developed into the perfect team for the Over.

This is for a number of different reasons, the first being the park. Fenway Park is a very generous hitter’s park because of the Green Monster in left and the huge gap in right field. Since the wind is blowing out once again tonight, the advantage will be to the hitters.

Secondly, the Red Sox pitching has been atrocious. Criswell hasn’t performed well as a starter in the last month or so and might not be prepared to go deep into the game. That creates another problem since the Red Sox bullpen is gassed after yesterday.

Boston has four relievers that have thrown 30 or more pitches in the last three days which means they only have three or four relievers that are fresh for tonight. If the Blue Jays knock Criswell out early, the Sox could be in deep trouble.

And finally, both lineups have crushed right-handed pitching this month. The Blue Jays and Sox rank fifth and sixth in OPS and wRC+ against right-handers in August. And since tonight’s probable starters are both righties and have been struggling with keeping the ball in the park lately, the only way to look at this total is the Over.

Neither bullpen is rested or ready for a long series and both offenses are looking to carry the pitching. Take the Over on Tuesday night in Boston.
