The Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers have met in nine series in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The first meeting between the teams was in the 1981/82 division semifinals during the Oilers' third year in the NHL in which Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals. The Kings won the series 3-2, and 50 goals were scored in the five-game series.
They next met in the 1985 division semifinals where the Oilers won in a 3-0 sweep en route to winning the Stanley Cup.
The third playoff meeting between the Oilers and Kings was in the 1987 division semifinals, where Edmonton won 4-1. The Oilers lost Game 1 but won Game 2 13-3. Gretzky had two goals and 13 assists in the series, Mark Messier had five goals and seven assists, and Jari Kurri had seven goals and four assists.
Gretzky moved to the other side of the rivalry before the 1988/89 season, and Los Angeles won the next playoff series between the teams, the 1989 division semifinals, in seven games. Gretzky had 13 points in the series against his former team.
That 1989 series started a streak where the teams met every year in the playoffs from that year until 1992. Edmonton won the final three series in that streak, and in 1990 they won the Stanley Cup.
After that, the teams didn't meet for 30 years until the first round in 2022. The Oilers won that series in seven games and Connor McDavid led his team with 14 points. They met again in 2023, the Oilers won in six games, and Leon Draisaitl had 11 points while McDavid and Evan Bouchard each had 10.
