Prior to this year's tournament, the FA Cup has been held 140 times, having first taken place in the 1871/72 season when Wanderers beat Royal Engineers 1-0 at the Kensington Oval.

Until 1999, a draw in the final would result in the match being replayed at a later date. Since then, the final has always been decided on the day, with extra-time and penalties if needed.

There have only ever been two penalty shoot-outs needed to determine a winner. In 2005, Arsenal overcame Man Utd before Liverpool beat West Ham on penalties a year later.

Man Utd are second in the all-time list, having won the FA Cup 12 times, while Chelsea and Tottenham have both claimed the spoils on eight occasions.
