Daily Faceoff's Weekly NHL Risers and Fallers

The Carolina Hurricanes have assumed the top position in the weekly power rankings as they won all three of their games last week to overtake the Dallas Stars.

The Hurricanes are playing great hockey of late, but they still have an outside shot of catching the New York Rangers for first in the Metropolitan Division and the Presidents' Trophy race. The Ottawa Senators would need to defeat the Rangers on Monday night, and 'Canes need to win their tilt against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night for that to occur.

With this being the final power rankings of the season, we will switch over to picks and predictions content for the playoffs. Stay tuned for Friday's edition, where Robert and I highlight our favourite first-round matchup bets!

Jump ahead here:

Let's take a look at the biggest risers and fallers in their weekly power rankings.

Risers

Nashville Predators

14th -> 11th (+3)

Last Week's Record: 2-0-1. +5 points.

Tuesday: 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets (10th)

Friday: 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks (31st)

Saturday: 6-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets (29th)

Division Standings: Fourth in the Central (-), six points behind the Colorado Avalanche.

Wild Card Standings: First in the Wild Card (-), three points ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Player of the Week: Roman Josi

Roman Josi had himself a spectacular three-game week. He scored two goals and finished with seven points and a +1 rating in 21:19 minutes of average ice time. If not for a slow start to the season, the Swiss defenseman would be neck and neck with Quinn Hughes for the Norris trophy. Shots-on-goal bettors would’ve cashed his prop in two of three games this week.

Predators' Week 28 Schedule: Pittsburgh Penguins (15th)

Vancouver Canucks

7th -> 5th (+2)

Last Week's Record: 2-0-1. +5 points.

Monday: 4-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights (14th)

Wednesday: 4-3 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes (27th)

Saturday: 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers (9th)

Division Standings: First in the Pacific (-), five points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers.

League Standings: Sixth in the league (-1), five points behind the New York Rangers.

Player of the Week: Quinn Hughes

Quinn Hughes finished tied with J.T. Miller on the Canucks in points with five this week. Hughes had one goal and four assists, with a +2 rating in 23:32 minutes of average ice time per game. The Canucks’ captain has carried his team to just one point shy of their first division title since 2013. Shots-on-goal bettors would’ve cashed his prop in two of three games this week.

Canucks' Week 28 Schedule: Calgary Flames (24th), Winnipeg Jets (10th)

Fallers

Minnesota Wild

16th -> 21st (-5)

Last Week's Record: 1-2. +2 points.

Tuesday: 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche (8th)

Friday: 7-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights (14th)

Saturday: 6-2 win over the San Jose Sharks (32rd)

Division Standings: Sixth in the Central (-), 20 points behind the Colorado Avalanche.

Wild Card Standings: Fourth in the Wild Card (-), 11 points behind the Vegas Golden Knights.

Let Down of the Week: Marco Rossi

This was a week Marco Rossi will be happy to forget. He would finish the week pointless with a -5 rating, including a -3 rating in two games against Colorado and Vegas. Shots-on-goal bettors would’ve hit his shot prop in just one of his three games this week.

This decline may be because John Hynes stacked his top line with Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Matthew Boldy, leaving Rossi to play with Ryan Hartman and Marcus Johansson. Nonetheless, for Rossi to go pointless after the Wild scored 10 goals this week is disappointing.

Wild's Week 28 Schedule: Los Angeles Kings (12th), Seattle Kraken (23rd)

Edmonton Oilers

6th -> 9th (-3)

Last Week's Record: 1-1-1. +3 points.

Wednesday: 5-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights (14th)

Friday: 3-2 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes (27th)

Saturday: 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks (5th)

Division Standings: Second in the Pacific (-), five points behind the Vancouver Canucks.

League Standings: Ninth in the league (-), 10 points behind the New York Rangers.

Let Down of the Week: Leon Draisaitl

It seems odd to place Leon Draisaitl under the "let down" tag, but with Connor McDavid out all week, fans would’ve expected more from the German.

Draisaitl scored and had an assist in their first game of the week, but he went pointless in the final two games and finished the week with an even rating.

With a contract extension on the horizon, are Oilers fans worried about paying him the high amount he'll likely demand, considering his play away from McDavid?

Oilers' Week 28 Schedule: San Jose Sharks (32nd), Arizona Coyotes (27th), Colorado Avalanche (8th)

Week 28 Lookahead

It's time for the playoff push; let's look at all the scenarios

First, let's start in the East.

The New York Islanders can clinch the a playoff spot Monday night with:

  • One point in their game against the New Jersey Devils, and the Detroit Red Wings lose to the Montreal Canadiens.
  • The Washington Capitals and Red Wings both lose in regulation.
  • The Red Wings lose in regulation and the Pittsburgh Penguins lose to the Nashville Predators.

The Detroit Red Wings control their own destiny in their two back-to-back games against the Montreal Canadiens. However, they’ll be eliminated from playoff contention if they lose to the Canadiens on Monday night.

If the Pittsburgh Penguins lose to the Nashville Predators on Monday night, they’ll be eliminated from playoff contention.

The West is much less eventful.

A first-round matchup is already set in stone, with the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche set to face off. Another first-round matchup can be clinched on Monday night if: The Nashville Predators defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Edmonton Oilers lose to the San Jose Sharks.

If these two things happen, the Vancouver Canucks and the Nashville Predators will play in the first round.

It should be an exciting finish to the season, and it all starts on Monday night.
