Canada Men's National Team 2022 World Cup Summary

The Canada Men's National Team lost its three World Cup Group Stage matches.

In the first game, Canada lost 1-0 to Belgium. Alphonso Davies saw his 10th-minute penalty saved by Thibault Courtois, and Michy Batshuayi scored the game's only goal in the 44th minute.

Canada's second game in the 2022 World Cup was a 4-1 loss to 2018 runners up Croatia. Canada opened the scoring through Davies in the second minute, but Croatia took the lead by halftime and scored two more in the second half to ice the game.

Their third and final World Cup game was against eventual semifinalists Morocco. Canada lost 2-1: Hakim Ziyech scored in the fourth minute and Youssef En-Nesyri scored in the 23rd minute, while a Nayef Augerd own goal in the 40th minute gave Canada some consolation.

Canada Men's National Team World Cup history

Canada has appeared in two World Cups: 1986 in Mexico and 2022 in Qatar. The team was eliminated in the Group Stage on both occasions.

Canada will participate in the 2026 World Cup because as hosts, they do not need to qualify.

Canada Men's National Team Gold Cup history

The Canada Men's National team has made 19 Gold Cup appearances, winning twice. Its first appearance was in 1977, when the competition was called the CONCACAF Championship.

Canada's Gold Cup championships came in 1985 and 2000. In 1985, Canada beat Honduras 2-1 to win the tournament. In 2000, the Canadians beat Colombia 2-0 in the final.

Canada Men's National Team Nations League history

Canada were the runners up in the first-ever edition of the Nations League, in 2023.

Canada lost 2-0 to the United States, who had home field advantage with the game being played in Las Vegas.

The next Nations League campaign for Canada begins on Friday, Nov. 17 with a matchup against Jamaica.

Canada Men's National Team Olympics history

A team representing Canada won the second-ever official Olympic soccer tournament in 1904. Galt FC represented Canada and beat two teams from the United States to win gold in a round-robin tournament.

They since made two other appearances in the Olympics, in 1976 and 1984. As the hosts in 1976, they did not make it out of the group stage. In 1984, they reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to Brazil.

The manager - Jesse Marsch

Previous coach Jon Herdman stepped down to take the Toronto FC job as he wanted to try his hand at managing on the club level. His former assistant with Canada, Mauro Biello, was appointed to the interim head coach position.

Biello held the tag since late 2023, but Canada found its new coach when it hired Jesse Marsch on May 13, 2024. Marsch last coached Leeds United when they were in the Premier League.

Marsch was most successful as head coach of the New York Red Bulls in MLS and RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. He is known for a high-pressing system that he developed and honed in six years with Red Bull-owned teams between 2015 and 2021.

His trophies as a coach include two MLS Supporters' Shields in 2015 and 2018 with New York and Austrian Bundesliga titles in 2019/20 and 2020/21 with RB Salzburg. He was the third American to coach in the Premier League after Bob Bradley and David Wagner.
