Katona started his amateur MMA career in January of 2010 with a win against Derek Desart by submission, which was followed by a similar victory against Zach Kellso.
Following a four-year layoff, Katona ended his amateur career with a third submission win against Wesley Bowman in March of 2014.
Near the end of 2014, Katona began his professional MMA career with a KO win against Michael Kay in a promotion called Maximum Fighting Championship. He bounced around several different promotions over the next three years, picking up wins in every fight he was scheduled.

Come December of 2018, Katona made his official UFC debut in the Bantamweight division, opening with a win against Matthew Lopez by unanimous decision.
He followed up this debut win with back-to-back losses by unanimous decision, one against Merab Dvalishvili in May of 2019 and the other against Hunter Azure in September of 2019.
After a two-year break, Katona returned to the Octagon in a different promotion called Brave Combat Federation where he beat Borislav Nikolic by submission in April of 2021 and Bair Shtepin by unanimous decision in August of 2021.
He next overcame Hamza Kooheji by split decision in March of 2022 to win the Brave CF Bantamweight title, which he then defended against Gamzat Magomedov by unanimous decision in October of 2022.
Prior to his return to the UFC, Katona participated in Ultimate Fighter 31 in 2023, where he beat Carlos Vera in the quarterfinals and Timur Valiev in the semifinals. Both of these were Pro Exhibition fights.
