Two of the biggest stars in boxing meet in Las Vegas on Saturday as Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin face off for a third time.

The fight, billed as The Trilogy, comes four years after the last fight between the two and Alvarez's WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC super-middleweight titles are on the line, as well as the Ring Magazine belt.

Golovkin is the unified middleweight champion, but his four titles are not up for grabs as this contest is a super-middleweight affair, so the main prize for these two stars is settling who is the superior fighter.

The first two fights were close, with the first meeting in 2017 being judged a draw and Canelo winning via majority decision a year later - on Saturday night we may see one of the greatest rivalries in boxing history finally decided.

Canelo vs GGG III background

The first meeting in 2017 was a cagey affair that was judged to be a draw, with two judges scoring the fight 116-112 in Golovkin's favour and one scoring 118-110 for Alvarez.

Many observers felt GGG had done enough to be award a win but ultimately a draw was perhaps a fair result.

That was the first time in Golovkin's career that he had failed to win, while it was just a second blemish on Canelo's record after a points loss to the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr earlier in his career.

Both fighters adopted tactical and cautious approaches in the first fight, but the second clash the following year was far more explosive. Canelo in particular was far more aggressive, while Golovkin tried to control proceedings behind his jab.

Canelo was awarded a majority decision victory and again the result was contentious, with many feeling the Kazakh had been denied a victory.

According to CompuBox, Golovkin outlanded Alvarez in eight of the 12 rounds and was successful with 234 of his 879 punches thrown, compared to 202 from 622 punches (33%) for Alvarez landed 202 of his 622 punches (33%).

However, the Mexican did land more power punches in nine of the rounds and those eye-catching shots tend to be the ones that stick in the heads of judges so it is perhaps no surprise he was awarded a split decision win.

Mexican superstar speaks exclusively to bet365 as he bids to write an emphatic final chapter to one of boxing's most enthralling trilogies.

Third meeting should prove decisive

The advantage may be with Canelo as he has one win over GGG already, but both men know a convincing victory on Saturday should put an end to their rivalry.

Alvarez is going into the contest on the back of a one-sided defeat to Russia's Dmitrii Bivol, but that was at light-heavyweight and he was unable to make any inroads against a bigger man.

The Mexican is unbeaten in this weight class, and is convinced he can put an end to any questions on his rivalry with GGG and has stated he is prepared "to knock him out".

Golovkin has accused Canelo of dodging him in the years since their last meeting, but he has also appeared supremely confident going into Saturday's showdown.

Canelo vs GGG III odds

Canelo is the heavy favourite to win at -600 and he is +160 to win by KO, TKO or disqualification after stressing that is his aim.

The 32-year-old is +105 to win by decision or technical decision, while a draw can be backed at +1800.

Golovkin, 40, is stepping up to super-middleweight after three world title fights at middleweight, but he is unbeaten since his loss to Alvarez and managed an impressive TKO win against Japan's Ryota Murata in Saitama earlier this year.

Golovkin is +400 to win by any method, +850 to win by KO, TKO or disqualification and +750 to win by decision or technical decision.
